Q: Who were Blind Melon?
A: Brad Smith - bass - born on September 29, 1968
Thomas Rogers Stevens - guitar - born on October 31, 1970
Richard Shannon Hoon - vocals - born on September 26, 1967
Christopher Thorn - guitar - born on December 16, 1968
Glen Graham - drums - born on December 5, 1968
Q: When and where were they formed?
A: The band was formed sometime in mid/late 1990 in Los Angeles. Brad and Rogers had moved there from Mississippi in 1989. Shannon moved there in March 1990, and met Brad and Rogers less than a month later. The trio started jamming together and decided to look for a second guitar player. Brad knew Christopher from a failed audition he had made for a group Christopher was in and invited him to join the group. For months the foursome searched Hollywood for the right drummer but no avail, eventually Rogers and Brad called up fellow Mississippian Glen Graham and persuaded him to come to L.A. and join the band. The line-up was complete.
Q: How did they get their name?
A:"Blind Melons" is the name Brad's father used to refer to his not-so-likely-to-succeed neighbors. The legend has it that one day Brad asked "What’s happening, blind melons?" and the name stuck.
Q: What other recordings do the band members appear on?
A: Click here to see the discography
Q: What unreleased songs are there?
A: Ever had the Feeling, Everyday, Mother, Rebirth, Tickled Pink, and What You Lost. There was 25-30 songs recorded during the Soup Sessions but they never had a chance to record vocals with them.
Q: Did the band cover Pink Floyd's Mother?
A: Blind Melon wrote and recorded a song called Mother early in their career. Shannon once covered Pink Floyd's Mother as a Mother's Day gift for his mom. That version was never released. However, they sometimes played parts of it live.
Q: What are the background lyrics at the end of St. Andrew's Fall?
A: Oh, I can pull the crappy things we did together in my day
So I posed myself some questions
Maybe this weeks gonna get me into shape
Hey I got my head buried 'neath the pillow
I got my head beneath the pillow
So low
Q: How do you listen to the hidden song on Soup?
A: Your cd player needs to have a rewind button on it (not the button that rewinds back to the previous song but rewinds during the same song). As soon as the cd starts, hit the rewind button until it gets to -2:24 and let it play. If you have it on cassette, it is just at the beginning of the tape though.
Q: What videos did the band make?
A: Dear Ol' Dad, Tones of Home, No Rain, Tones of Home (different version than original with the "bee girl" old), Change, Galaxie, Toes Across the Floor, Three is a Magic Number, and Soul One.
Q:Where can I get t-shirts etc.?
A: Online auctions such as Ebay or Yahoo Auctions
Q: Where can I find guitar tabs?
A: You can find most at the Paper Scratchings site. There are tab books you can buy for the first album and Soup. The Soup book is available on amazon.com.
Q: How and when did Shannon pass away?
A: Contrary to most articles and books, Shannon died of a cocaine overdose not a heroin overdose. It happened in New Orleans, Louisiana on October 21, 1995 during the Soup tour.
Q: Where is Shannon buried?
A: Dayton, Indiana. Click here for directions.
Q: What, when and where is the vigil?
A: The vigil is held annually in Dayton at Shannon's grave on the closest Saturday to September 26th (Shannon's birthday). People come from all around to celebrate Shannon's life.
