Brad Smith was born in West Point, Mississippi on September 29, 1968.  He played baritone sax in junior high and then snare drum. Brad met  Rogers Stevens when they were in Cub Scouts together.  Brad taught Rogers how to play guitar and the pair were in a number of high school bands together.  In 1989 they moved out to Los Angeles and were working with a female vocalist until a mutual friend introduced them to Shannon Hoon.  Brad brought Christopher into the band after unsuccessfully auidtioning for the guitarist's group, Animal Farm, some months previously.  Several months later after failing to find the right drummer Rogers called Glen Graham, a drummer back in Mississippi who he and Brad had met on the club scene.

After Blind Melon's demise Brad began to work on the songs which would eventually be released as Abandon Jalopy. He also backed singer/songwriter Gus with Christopher Thorn at a gig opening for Oasis.  For a while it was announced that the members of Blind Melon were auditioning for a new singer but nothing came of it. Then it was announced the group would continue with Brad handling lead vocals but eventually the group just went their seperate ways.  During this time Brad also contributed to Joe Tullos' debut record with Rogers and Glen.

In 1998, Brad and Christopher teamed up with vocalist Chris Shinn and began working on what would become Luma/Unified Theory. Brad turned his hand to production in 1999 and worked with several bands, including Love Battery and Maktub.  Luma released their debut EP and began playing live shows and he again hooked up with Christopher to provide instrumentation for the group Zen Mafia.

The year 2000 found Brad working with Pin Ups and touring with Unified Theory in support of their debut album which was released in August.  Also that year he  worked with Christopher on Amy Correia's  debut EP and Album providing instrumentation and production skills.

May 2001 saw the release through his own website of Abandon Jalopy, Mercy, the record he first began working on in 1996.
