Richard Shannon Hoon was born on September 26th 1967 in Lafayette, Indiana.  It wasn't until Shannon was in his late teens when he started to think seriously about a career in music.  He was in a Guns N' roses cover band in Lafayette and also formed another band, Styff Kitten with his friend, Michael Kelsey. Shannon moved out to Los Angeles in 1990 and quickly met up with the people he would form Blind Melon with.  Before Blind Melon had recorded their debut, Shannon went to hang out in the studio where Guns N' Roses were recording their double albums Use Your Illusion I and II.  Axl, a fellow native of Lafayette had been friends with Shannons half brother and sister. Whilst in the studio Shannon was invited to add backing vocals to the song "Don't Cry" and eventually went on to appear on a number of other songs on the two record set. He even made an appearance in the promotional video for "Don't Cry."

After Shannon's tragic death the remaining members of the group released one last record, Nico, which was a collection of outtakes which included several songs Shannon had recorded alone on which they had added extra instrumentation or had left as they were.
