Brad
wrote this song between solo folk gigs just after his arrival in Hollywood.
It is about his codependency with a messed up exgirlfriend. "She
had a hard time with depression. I was telling myself that I was
writing it about her: how fucked up she could be, but how intelligent she
was and why she was so unhappy and how much she needed me to be happy.
And I realized I was writing it about myself at the same time. I
needed her just as much." Brad said. He called the song "No Rain"
because "she would sleep even when it was sunny outside and she'd complain
that there wouldn't be any rain, because that would give her an excuse
to stay in." "None of us think it's the best song on the album.
It was just one of the songs I had on a cassette somewhere...It's our lightest
song- this lame song about codependecy- but it's like our mascot song!"
This was the bands most commercially successful song. The bee-girl star of the video, Heather DeLoach, was given a movie contract due to the popularity of the song video. The director of the video also did Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit. The field where the band plays is a private farm 30 miles outside of Hollywood. Glen was worried about shooting at the farm because he has bad allergies. The parts of the video in which the bee girl walks around were filmed on the streets of Hollywood. All the people she met just happened to be there, none of them were actors. The "adult" bees were a mix of actors, Germans, and gang members from L.A.
The song reached #17 in the UK and #21 in the USA single charts.
The song is played in Howard Stern's 1997 movie, Private Parts.
Lyrics:
All
I can say is that my life is pretty plain
I
like watchin’ the puddles gather rain
And
all I can do is just pour some tea for two
and
speak my point of view
But
it’s not sane, It’s not sane
I
just want some one to say to me
I’ll
always be there when you wake
Ya
know I’d like to keep my cheeks dry today
So
stay with me and I’ll have it made
And
I don’t understand why I sleep all day
And
I start to complain that there’s no rain
And
all I can do is read a book to stay awake
It
rips my life away, but it’s a great escape
escape,
escape
All
I can say is that my life is pretty plain
ya
don’t like my point of view
ya
think I’m insane
Its
not sane, it’s not sane
I
just want someone to say to me
I’ll
always be there when you wake
Ya
know I’d like to keep my cheeks dry today
so
stay with me and I’ll have it made
